Book review

Illustrated by a Navajo artist, Irving Toddy, this book describes the life of young Navajo growing up in the Canyon de Chelly in Northern Arizona at the turn of the last century. The young boy helps his mother herd sheep and he explores some of the Anasazi ruins in the canyon as he grows up. Eventually he is forced to attend school by the Navajo authorities. His adventure walking to the school at Fort Defiance icludes encounters with with a coyote and a bear in the forest. The illustrations in color are of the actual locations described by the text. This is a children's book with text at 4-6th grade level but with illustrations for any age.
